It's less about "can't" and more about there being too many disadvantages to
pre-create in many cases.
Sparse representations would fit in this category... the number of documents
with a value is small, so you use a hash (like Solr's query elevation
component).
Solr's random sort comparator is another - it hashes directly from docid to get
the sort value. Not slow per se, but it's certainly going to be faster to
avoid recalculating it on every compare.
