i guess the final thing I will say, is the inconsistency of treating U+FFFF 
special, without being consistent and treating the entire category 
(noncharacter) the same way.

This is what lead to the index corruption bug in the first place after all, if 
you look at it from a unicode perspective and not from a java perspective.
