Thanks for the answer Andrew.

Interestingly when opening those PDFs in Illustrator they look the
same and when the PDFs are rasterized (via pdftoppm) the output is the
same as it always was, so turns out not to be a problem. The two PDFs
just look different when opening in a PDF viewer.

BTW the new version is excellent for adding cartographic symbols via
SVG images so thanks for that!
