I also have the exact same problem.  Just install JDK-1.1.6-v4a libc
version on Red Hat 4.2.  If I run javac_g, I get:
SIGSEGV   11*  segmentation violation

I also believe it may be because it can't find shared lib's libjava.so &
libawt.so, still investigating!!
