Robert, I'm somewhat new to this but since I haven't seen your question answered I'll do my best. I installed RH 5.0 and grabbed the JDK 1.1.3 (not the rpm version) a couple of months ago with the same problem. I quickly found out through this great mailing list that a patch, (glibc-2.0.7-7.i386.rpm or later), is necessary. In seconds my problem was solved.
