| VNC (Virtual Network Computer) is a step in this direction - it allows
| *any* Unix or Win95/NT system running the VNC viewer client *or* a
| java-capable web browser to access a Unix or Win95/NT box

Veerrry interesting -- thanks for the pointer! I wasn't aware of this.

After looking a little closer, though, this probably isn't what I want:
It is based on treating the thin client purely as a remote framebuffer,
which is ok for some fairly static applications, but absolutely the pits
if (say) you want to fly through a scene or show a rotating 3D shape or
whatever.
I'd much rather have a server-side kit that ran Swing widgets in particular
and Java widgets in general on the client side, so as to leverage the compute
power there effectively and give widgets fast network-lag-independent local
response to basic mouse manipulation.
