Well, the 1.1.6 v5 and v5a builds for x86 systems
were done on:

for glibc - a RedHat 5.0 base system with
current updates and the Linux 2.0.35 kernel

        for libc5 - a SuSE 5.2 system - it is one of
my test systems - and it has Linux 2.0.33
        kernel as modified by SuSE.

On x86 we use the production kernels since most users will
be using such kernels. Other platforms may use other
kernels.
