Is there a reason to override the standard
l'n'f? I choose window managers quite deliberately
to get a consistent l'n'f across applications,
whether written in Java or whatever.
Anyway, you might get some ideas from the MDI
code available on my homepage. Not quite what
you want, but maybe another way to structure
your application.
