Difficulties with appletviewer et al (kaffe)

Hello...  I am trying to use kaffe, and tried to start out by running
hello world application + applet.  The application runs fine, but
appletviewer won't run for me to check on my applet.  Here's the error
message:

java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError: `[o with a tilde over it]A
        at java/lang/Throwable.<init>(37)
        at java/lang/Error.<init>(21)
        at java/lang/LinkageError.<init>(21)
        at java/lang/ExceptionInInitializerError.<init>(28)

(I'm running Debian, XF86_SVGA 3.3.3, etc.  What exactly can I tell
you to help you troubleshoot with me?)
