which JDK?

Hi,

I feel really stupid for having to ask this, but is there a way to find
out what flavour of Linux one has? (RH, Slackware, etc.)  I have no
idea what is installed on my work machine.

As soon as I find that out, my next question (probably a FAQ) is, what's
the (newest && workingest) version?
