I'm sorry but this is not an answer.
I have the same problem (SIGSEGV 11* segmentation violation etc,)
when I run the appletviewer.
My Linux box is Slackware 3.0 kernel 2.0 (not) running jdk1.1.6 v2.
Today I will post a much more detailed msg about this hoping that someone
using slackware have already resolved it.

When Linux doesn't work as it is supposed to, it's a bug. According to
MicroSoft(tm) NT have no bugs, it just randomly develop new features.
