This sounds like it might be related to your Xwindows setup (and therefore
XBD), although I'm a little suspect about why it only happens with Motif
apps.
Keep in mind, that you don't have to use XBD. However, it's the "new and
improved" way of doing things, so most distributions default to setting it
up.
