You probably downloaded the wrong jdk version.
If you have /lib/libc.so.6 you'll need jdk_1.1.7-v1a-glibc-x86.tar.gz.
If you don't have /lib/libc.so.6 you'll need jdk_1.1.7-v1a-libc5-x86.tar.gz
