linux on laptops

I want to install linux on a yet to be bought notebook.  Are there
driver compatibility issues for the ethernet card?  Should I make sure
to get/avoid certain ethernet cards?  Is there a list of supported
devices somewhere?  Am I just conjuring up problems where none exist?
