Interesting article comparing Java VMs at http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-08-1998/jw-08-volanomark.html The results here are oriented towards testing lots and lots of connections. Suprisingly, Linux does quite poorly with both the JDK and TowerJ. The article suggests that this might not just be a slow Java, but rather problems with Linux.
