Netscape 4.5 (and 4.07 and up) support JDK 1.1

However, if a web page defines that the applet is a plug-in applet
then you will need a plug in even if the web browser can handle it
since the HTML tags specify a plugin.

I have never specified the plugin in any of our pages so that the JDK 1.1
applets run just fine (well, within Netscape limits :-() on Linux and
Windows and Solaris and FreeBSD (the only systems I have tried Netscape
with JDK 1.1 applets that we run)

Due to Netscape having taken so long to get 1.1 JDK compatibility, we
have had to make most of our applets JDK 1.0.2 (which is a pain since
all of our server side code is JDK 1.1 and the common classes need to
thing "both ways")
