I've been able to run Apache-JServ 1.0b3 with JDK1.2-pre1 on RedHat 5.2/2.2.2,
manual startup.
Be sure to tweak your startup scripts to use
java -green -Djava.compiler=
instead of plain old java, though I don't think that's your problem.
