I missed the previous discussion on this topic, so I don't know if this
was mentioned.  IBM has committed itself to supporting OS/2 by keeping
its Java implementation up-to-date.  Because OS/2 and NT have some broad
API similarities (for historical reasons), this JVM is easily ported to
NT, so IBM gets "double duty" from this codebase.  Linux doesn't look at
all like OS/2 (which is a pity), so it might be just as hard -- if not
harder -- to port IBM's JVM to Linux as it is to port Sun's.

That doesn't mean it can't be done, it just requires IBM to be that much
more motivated to make the effort.

BTW, consider the fact that IBM's JVM is essentially cross-compiled on
NT and OS/2 and that it runs much faster on OS/2.  Sigh...
