You'll find many of your questions answered in the mailing list archive, which
seems to be functioning as the de faqto (pun intended) FAQ.
The short story is that:
a) The 1.2 port basically works, and is currently in pre-release. But some
tricky problems dealing with Linux threads and such are resulting in robustness
issues that are taking a long time to solve.
b) It's unclear how Sun will apply the licensing terms on HotSpot to the Linux
community, but at least the Blackdown 1.2 port already has a JIT.
