I also use SuSE Linux 6.0, and I got this problem originally too. I
created a link to 2.9.0 - this seems to work OK now, at least for Java
applications (I haven't tried appletviewer yet) - don't ask me why
though. I tried Notepad and Swingset, and they both now run. This is
using java from the jdk bin directory, not the jre.

The only problem I have is that it is practically unusable, as it is
horrendously slow - I went to make a cup of coffee (Java, obviously)
while SwingSet was loading. Still, I am using KDE on a P120 laptop
with only 24MB RAM, and it was quite slow to start with - somebody
suggested trying blackbox, which sounds like a good idea. Also, the
jre should be a bit faster.

Somebody mentioned problems with the AWT - well, I haven't tried any
applications which use AWT, as this is pretty much redundant as a GUI,
although I presume they all use the AWT event model.

     Regards,

     Dave.
