What's up with XtShellStrings?

I just install the jdk1.1.7 v3 from blackdown, and javac runs (an
improvement over v1a, to be sure). However, anything dealing with the AWT
yields an error regarding libawt.so, missing XtShellStrings. Is there
something I'm missing?
