Louis-David Mitterand,

My challenge to you is the same one I have given to many Microsoft-heads:

Don't post here again until you can tell us one thing that Microsoft has
been truly innovative about. One thing that they did not copy, buy or steal
from somewhere else and mass market. One technologically "innovative" thing
that came from Bill or Microsoft. One idea that was original, not just a
new "standard" that was forced down people's throats by way of market
dominance.

I've only been beat by one soft-head, so we'll dis-qualify his response
up-front. Microsoft Bob does not get credit here.

Until you can justify Microsoft's constant claim that they need the ability
to innovate, don't stand up for them since this is there theme song today
and it has no value.

Business innovations (such as forcing manufacturers to buy your O/S even
when you don't need it) don't count.

|MS is dominant on the desktop and consumer OS for now simply because its
|competition has been so lame and disorganized. If MS were so powerful
|and monopolistic they would have killed Linux somehow. But they can't.
|This alone defeats any argument as MS being an "evil empire". Hell, even
|MS uses Linux's success to defend themselves in their antitrust trial!

|It's not a troll. I mean every word. Do you call anything you don't
|agree with a "troll"? I don't agree with you but I still respect your
|opinions as long as they don't infringe on my own freedom (of expression
|or otherwise).

|
|Linux people don't even need to acknowledge MS existence. Bashing MS
|makes them appear as frustrated, pimple-faced geeks that can't get a
|date, let alone a life. Mark my words: Microsoft doesn't exist anymore,
|forget Microsoft, it's over, they have lost the server market. But then
|so has Sun for that matter. Then we are back on-topic:
|
|Sun's attitude where Java and Linux is concerned is much worse and
|stupider that anything MS would have done. At least MS would have been
|straight about it and said "fuck off, no way you guys are getting the
|source to this, we set the standards and you keep developing your client
|apps".
|
|Sun instead is trying to find a middle ground between open-source and
|proprietary that sucks enormously and frustrates me as a Java developer.
|Every day a visit to freshmeat.net slashdot.org shows how lively and
|creative the Linux community is. Us java-linux developers we suffer in
|silence, waiting the good word from Sun god, the Blackdown porters
|spending their energy on stuff that will probably never be released to
|the community.
|
|Have you tried Solaris recently? It sucks when you're used to Linux. No
|decent shell, no compiler, no tools, horrible and backward motif GUI,
|expensive proprietary hardware (except for Solaris x86 but go find
|supported hardware..), expensive everything. Sun is no better than MS
|when it comes to locking-in customers and racketting them with upgrade
|"taxes". Only they're less successful at it.
