Hi folks I don't have kaffe installed so it definitely isn't the problem with Java. Thanks to Michael.Sinz for providing a few more points to check. I have to leave this for a while now - I've been putting stuff off trying to solve it - but I'll come back to it when I have a few days to spare. In the meantime, if anyone cares to post me information directly on installing Java on various Linux distros I'll collate it and post it in case I'm not the only one having troubles. There doesn't appear to be anything on which jre's work with which distros and what one has to do to make it actually happen.
