Yes, it is really ugly  ;-}
Although you will have to do it anyway for processing  ( awt/java2D don't
provide any extraordinary kind of functionality for image processing ),
developing the codecs from scratch is a real burden.
Nathan's suggestion about Xvfb is really appealing in this case!
