1. -Xmx under other OSes (at least solaris and windows) defaults to 64M, where blackdown has set the default to 16M... I guess I've actually got two questions about this: A. why (in general) have a default limit at all - I assume this parameter also affects GC thresholds, but shouldn't these be separate from any heap limitation? I know, this isn't really linux-specific, but I figure some of you may have some insight into what exactly this parameter controls and why Sun defined it in this way. B. why lower the default limit to 16M? It seems a gratuitous difference from the other ports with little actual benefit. 2. -Xrs is described as "reduc[ing] the use of operating system signals." Does this have any effect under Linux?
