You're right, it doesnt. But one sometimes encounters scripts from
outside Blackdown (from sources such as Sun Microsystems) that still
use that variable. I'm just trying to eliminate a potential conflict.
I now see that doesn't apply to your situation.

Wrong location. Run it from /usr/share/jdk1.2/bin/. That script sets
up everything, including the path where shared libraries are found.
That should fix the libhpi.so problem.
