I have the same setup as you do, I remember the problem. There was a tech note
on it in the original jdk documentation, it says:

" There have been a lot of changes from the previous release, almost entirely
bug fixing.  The following list highlights some of the more important ones:

* Base memory footprint has been reduced.  The default max heap size is now
  16 meg (it was 64).  This may mean that if you get OutOfMemory errors when
  running particular applications, you'll need to use -mxNNm to increase the
  maximum heap size. "

Do you get the error on small programs as well as the larger ones? I have had
continued success with changing this number to 32 megs.

The only other item I am using is the JRE for X-emacs, and it only passes what
it is told to the compiler..
