jdk1.3/forte problem

I tried running the recent jdk1.3+hotspot downloaded from sun
with forte community edition 1.0 v502.  

It has a problem whereby the jmenus pull down but then immediately
disappear, so it is impossible to select any menu items.

Any thoughts or suggestions on what to try? / thanks
