I would start with the major archive
sites. The MIT site is still around
at ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/
and its been there for years. The
other major US archive site is 
http://metalab.unc.edu which used to
be
sunsite.unc.edu. This is also an old
site that is often the source for
people who want to start making
distributions of their own. Look
into
their archive link.

They have readme and getting started
how-to documents.

Others in the group may want to look at the Java area.
