BTW, the reason for this is that the AWT makes a lot of assumptions about 
the window manager's behavior that are basically a lot like MWM. Perhaps 
the GNU Classpath version does not have this problem. Has anyone tried it?

I think I also remember now that WindowMaker may have behaved pretty well
