It depends upon the shell you're using.  nohup is required on
sh and csh, but it is not required on bash.  I never, ever need to
use nohup and I regularly start programs from an xterm and then
exit that xterm, and even X11 altogether.  I have a seti launcher
which does this without a nohup.
