Try javac -verbose and see if it says something useful.

Otherwise, reproduce your steps and cut/paste exactly what you did
into a message so we can see it.  

Note that some linux distributions install Kawa by default.  This has
caused some problems for some new java users.  I don't think this
is what's happening to you.

Question: Did you capitalize Java and Javac by habit?  They're 
lowercase commands on all unices as far as I know.
