Emacs+JDE offers enough functionality for the day-to-day work.  The
problem with Forte is that it doesn't offer any support for languages
other than Java.  Say a couple of years from now, Java is not hot
anymore and you want to learn a new language.  If you use Emacs, you can
be sure that there will be a mode for that language.  If you use Forte,
you have to abandon ship and learn a new tool.

I don't see anything wrong with Forte, though.  In fact, I liked it. 
But my machine is too old (Pentium 200/64MB RAM) to make Forte to run at
a reasonable speed.
