In particular, don't let those vague and overdue (3+ years) comments
about open sourcing Java stall any _real_ open source efforts. It's
likely more appropriate to read those comments as FUD intended to
delay/confuse/undermine those efforts than as reality. (If they were
serious, their "JCP 2.0" process wouldn't be predicated on Sun owning
copyright to all extension APIs, and there'd be an ISO or even ECMA
process underway for Java. QED.)
I must say that I think the GCJ work needs more hands, though. It's
still a PITA to get going, though the last few versions I've tried have
been rather interesting. If the GCC powers-that-be were together enough
to have an overdue beta ("2.97" maybe :-), that'd help a lot more than
the whining I heard after yet another distro shipped a 2.96 (out of
sheer frustration that GCC 2.95.2 _still_ had no followon).
Meanwhile, I'll make sure that the Free Software code I do in Java
runs on Kafffe. As GCJ gets more ready, GCJ will go on the list.
Reliance on JDK 1.2 (etc) features is an anti-goal for now.
