Try to download source distribution and compile it yourself.
There is a Makefile.linux file in jakarta-tomcat/src/native/apache1.3
You would need to edit it to set apache and java location.
Than you just use "make -f Makefile.linux" to compile it.
There is also an example on their mod_jk documentation page of how to do it.
Give it a try:)

BTW there is jakarta mail list dedicated to tomcat.
