The problem:
5026 pts/5 S 0:00
/home/alannon/lib/j2sdk1.3.1/bin/i386/native_threads/java
5057 pts/5 Z 0:00 [java <defunct>]
Java fails to to run, instead hanging in this state. Very, very
rarely, I get a core-dump instead. This happens intermittently.
Sometimes it will work just fine, sometimes it will not, with no
discernable pattern.
This happens under 1.3.1 using -client, -server or -classic with
native threads but not -classic with green threads.
This also happens under 1.2.2 with native but not green threads.
Oddly, it also seems to happen with IBM's 1.3 JVM.
It makes no difference what I am actually trying to do with the JDK.
'java' or 'java -version' or 'java foo' will all reproduce the
problem.
I am running RedHat Linux 7.1, freshly installed, with all of the
changes and patches that CPanel includes. The JDKs I am using are
freshly downloaded from blackdown, not the one included in CPanel.
libc appears to be 2.2.2
ld is version 2.10.91
kernel is 2.4.2-2smp
This is a dual 1ghz pIII machine with SMP enabled.
Does this look like a known problem to anybody out there?
