Just wanted to let you know that xvfb did fix this guy's problem.
Here's an extract from his reply to me:

whining. The Xvfb solution works great. I managed to snag a binary from
http://ferret.wrc.noaa.gov/Ferret/. Using Xvfb is real simple as well.
