Try _Thinking in Java, 2nd Edition_ by Bruce Eckel. I find it's a good book, and it's available for free (from www.mindview.net); however, it's not a very easy book for a beginner - I for one had a hard time getting started (once you got over the first two chapters or so, that got better, and I started to get the feeling I was understanding things. Oh, and if you're new to programming at all, I'd recommend skipping over the introduction, and maybe reading a shorter, "softer" tutorial first - just up to "Hello, World" or so).
