I am new to all this but have also been told to make sure the rpmdatebase remains informed of the system, for uninstall and managing dependencies. I made the mistalke of upgrading Xfree86 without rpms now Mandrake still cant use the upgraded version as it only sees the old one. I can see rpms might have their limitations, but why in this case? When you say use the .bin -- does that mean downloading it? or is it int the .rpm.bin somewhere? I am still unsure what both the phrases: use the rpm.bin use the .bin mean exactly. How does one unpack these files? (Sorry for such basic questions but every installation seems to be utterly different.)
