I think Debian 3.0 (Woody) would
be just fine for you.

You could add the blackdown URIs
to you sources.list and install
the jdk (probably 1.3 as the 1.4
.debs [debian packages] are not
out yet or in beta).

I really like Debian,
the debian Java packages 
integrate nicely into the system
and its a Debian system is very
easy to maintain.

Also, if you are stuck, you
can always ask questions on
#debian on irc.openprojects.net
(there is also a #java channel,
 for Java in general, you
 might also want to check that).
