LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 should be linux threads.
I just tried it out for myself, and I seem to be seeing the same problem. LD_ASSUME_KERNEL does not appear to make a difference. So far I have been searching the docs to find out if a particular libc or kernel version is required, but have found no information so far.
