Subject: RE: some tools in java....

Hi Kent

U can use the open source Java IDE called Eclipse, which comes along with different plugins called lomboz( J2EE).

and as for the alternatives for VSS linux has a normal distribution of a program distributed called CVS which is a good tool.

Apart from these above given tools there are some professional ones also available of which includes the Websphere studio by IBM and others but i might say i still preferred eclipse for my developement as i had the opportunity to plugin things i needed.

And CVS is as good as VSS also eclipse has a direct connectivity for the CVS so u do as much as to connect to the CVS server and keep up ur source and version control.

As for the databases compatible there are variety of them sybase 11.9.2 and oracle 8.0 are supported nicely but there might be some features that would be absent or u might face a bit of trouble handling them while install.

Other wise u can surely go for the postgres or a commercial version of MySQL which is a good small to medium use DB.

U can find the eclipse on www.eclipse.org  and lomboz on www.objectlearn.com as they are opensource they can be freely downloaded and u can test them as per ur requirements. Since eclipse project is having a major backing of IBM hence the system is good. U can find either of the two versions a MOTIF based and another i guess if GTK based ( version 2.0 of gtk lib and above).

Hope u might find this information satisfactory and as per ur needs.

Thanks and regards

Shishir
