Yes, it does! 

What's the purpose of those lines? For example, there is/was:

serif.0=-b&h-lucidabright-medium-r-normal--*-%d-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1
serif.1=--symbol-medium-r-normal--*-%d-*-*-p-*-urw-fontspecific

Is the serif.1 line only used, when I (or rather the program, I 
guess) am not using iso-8859-1? I *am* not using iso-8859-1, but
UTF-8, according to my locale setting of LANG=de_DE.UTF-8.
