After meditating on this a while we decided to just stick to creating a version of the SpanishStemmer that doesn't use accents. We've gotten it working, and are donating the code to Lucene, in case the project has any use for it. Ideally I think it should be merged with the current SpanishStemmer, so that a single stemmer works both for indexes and queries that remove accents, and those that don't. The code is at the end of the message. The author of the modifications is Sandra Luz Aguirre, who is an intern at the Instituto de Investigaciones Dr. José María Luis Mora [1].
