We have an application that is heavily dependent on Java2D and have been completely
unsatisfied with the performance as well. We have always assumed that either Sun or a
third party would eventually develop an accelerated replacement but that just hasn't
materialized yet.
I haven't spent a significant amount of time with the source code for Java2D, but I am
fairly certain that creating a hardware accelerated version will not be a trivial task.
With the recent release of the Java 1.3 Beta, there appears to be a new interface that
may allow a different approach to this problem. I found a description of something
called the "AWT Native Interface" in the 1.3 JDK documentation. Here is the link:
http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.3/AWT_Native_Interface.html
I believe that using this method to speed up Java2D would be platform dependent, but
it is likely to be easier to implement that a platform independent solution.
Does anyone else have information on the "AWT Native Interface"?

Subject: [JAVA2D] Hardware Accelerated Java2D...
I've seen an article in this list which was asking
the possibility of hardware accelerated Java2D API
implementation. A reply to it from Java2D team said that they
were evaluating the possibility.
Anyway, currently there has been no announcement of any plan
to supply hardware accelerated implementations of Java2D API.
So I'm asking...
I'm currently developing an application on Java2. The application
doesn't heavily rely on Java2D, but overall user experience
is not so good even on highend WinNT machines(PII 400MHz
with 256MB RAM). Especially the performance of Swing is
unacceptable with Java2D for our purpose. So I plan to work
on a modification of current Java2D implementation which will
utilize hardware acceleration facilities provided by a specific
video hardware (by licensing Java2 source edition).
I believe the performance of Java2D and Swing will be improved
over time, at least when Windows has GDI+. But I can't wait
for the enhancements because of our development schedule.
Could anyone give me some estimation of how much resources
the work will take? Also any information which is related to do
the work will also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
