I can answer one of your questions and provide a few pointers:

See the java.awt.geom.Ellipse2D and java.awt.geom.Arc2D classes.
The other questions can probably be better answered by others who have
experimented doing the kinds of things you are doing. Your question
about background clearing on Swing components is probably answered in
an article on the Swing Connection on the java.sun.com web site. Your
question about mouse events might be better answered by the team at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] unless someone here has some experience dealing
with that issue...
