You don't mention text here, but if you are deriving scaled fonts that
may be the problem. Up to jdk1.2.2 every derived font is cached, and in
an app of mine where many scaled and rotated fonts were created we saw
just that sort of rapid memory leak. The bug is listed as fixed in
jdk1.3 (but not the current beta). We also discovered an alternate fix
using ReflectPermission to clear the private font cache in jdk1.2.x
