Maybe you can override the paintComponent method of the JTextArea
In pseudo Code

paintComponent(Graphics g){
        g.drawImage(image);
        super.paintComponent(g);
}

Propably you must call setOpaque(false) on the Component so that the
call to super doesn't paint over the background
