Yes, it can be done. To see how, look at pages 323-328 of Java 2D API Graphics by
Vincent Hardy. If
you don't have access to that, download the glf graphics framework from Sun and look
at ShapeStroke,
WaveStroke, or TextStroke java files in the com.sun.glf.goodies package and see how he
implements the
Stroke interface.
