Since this is the opposite direction from what I'd have expected
from the changes that have been made we'd like to see have a test
program to look into it.

Assuming you are only printing a small number of pages, then
large spool files are almost always due to printing the whole page
as a raster. But 1.3.1 actually moved to a 3 byte DIB for printing
rasters instead of a 4 byte DIB. Not good enough yet but still the
opposite direction from what your experience would assume.

There's one trick we try to reduce spool file size that might
(in wild imaginings) have caused you problems if you have numerous
small transparent images on a single page.

points out that for some cases it may be appropriate to draw the
transparent part of the page into an  opaque image and then print
that image.
